Introduction / Learning Outcomes

By now, you're aware that "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis is the definitive modal jazz record. Modes have a particular color or mood associated with them and the second mode that you must be familiar with as a jazz player is Mixolydian, which is the fifth mode of the major scale. "All Blues" is a traditional 12-bar blues form, but the melody, accompaniment and solos emphasize the Mixolydian mode, giving the tune a sound unique from a delta blues.
