Ballads and Pop Tunes 1
Jazz has a long tradition of covering pop tunes; many tunes in the Real Book come from "The Great American Songbook," a collection of songs by Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, Hoagy Carmichael, and many other composers who wrote pop songs and show tunes from 1930 - 1960. Sometimes I've had a gig where the vocalist comes from a musical theatre or pop background and it's nice to have a few of these pop tunes ready to go.
